Pottery Workshops

Teaching and learning are my core passions, which led me to transition from a formal classroom environment to establishing my own pottery workshops in Devon and Somerset. With over 30 years of experience in creating objects from clay, I am dedicated to sharing my skills and knowledge with those eager to learn.

My workshops focus on providing a relaxed and non-judgmental environment for participants to learn the fundamentals of clay through hand-building techniques, fostering a sense of mindfulness throughout the creative process. As a mobile pop-up studio, I can facilitate workshops in various locations. With 18 years of experience teaching in primary schools, secondary schools, and higher education, I possess the knowledge and expertise to create tailored workshops suitable for all age groups. I strongly believe that clay is accessible to everyone, and that anyone can acquire the skills needed to create.

So lovely spending a rainy Saturday with this wonderful group of creatives. Today we managed to cram two workshops into one day. We learnt the art of Nerikomi and how to make coloured clay and create interesting patterns; followed by learning mocha diffusion, where you create a coloured acidic solution which you then dab into wet slip, which creates interesting effects. A huge well done to everyone who came. It was a very interesting day exploring wonderful ceramic techniques. What a great way to spend a morning learning how to make sea urchin bud vases out of clay. Thank you to everyone who came. Your urchins are absolutely beautiful 😍 I can’t wait to see them glazed and finished. Such a lovely day setting up this new exhibition “Clay & Sticks” at @cockingtoncourt with the amazing @vikwestawayart and @charlineclaycolours ⭐️ This contemporary art exhibition showcases new collaborations of work incorporating clay and willow in unusual ways, with each piece responding to our natural world. So excited to reveal new work I’ve been busy creating for our upcoming Clay & Sticks exhibition at Cockington Court starting this coming weekend. This piece is called Tidal Strata, and explores the fragility of our coastline, particularly focusing on erosion of the Torbay region of South Devon. Each layer contains varying amounts of sand collected from Torquay and Paignton, and glazed with a copper barium glaze. I was particularly inspired by the layered rock, fractured cliffs and compressed tectonic formations, which tells the story of this area. I will also be exhibiting collaborative work made with @vikwestawayart and @charlineclaycolours

Introducing my new work… Taith Ardudwy Collection. This series of hand-built vessels are inspired by walks along the Taith Ardudwy path in North Wales. Each piece is coiled by hand and includes sand collected from beaches along the route. Carved inscriptions, textured surfaces and my own glazes are quiet nods to the stunning Welsh landscape along the way. #TaithArdudwy #Ceramics #handbuiltceramics #NorthWales #cymru

New work delivered to @tonicgallerysalcombe this past weekend. These vessels are hand-coiled using St Thomas stoneware clay, with sand from Salcombe worked into each piece. My glaze is made in the studio using recycled copper from oxidised copper piping. I scrape the verdigris into a matt barium glaze base, then add copper oxide to intensify the colour. Each piece is part of an ongoing search to capture the luminous turquoise blue of the sea at Salcombe.
