Taith Ardudwy

  • Oriel Tŷ Meirion, Y Brif Heol, Dyffryn Ardudwy LL44 2DH, UK (map)

This exhibition is a curated collection of artworks led by Mima to inspire a group of artists to walk the Taith Ardudwy from Barmouth to Llandecwyn covering ancient routes and landmarks surrounded by the Rhinogydd mountain range and the Cambrian coast where the mountains meet the sea.

I have created a new collection of work responding to the pathway.

Taith Ardudwy Collection

This collection of hand-built vessels has been made through the slow, meditative process of coiling, using St Thomas stoneware clay. The work is shaped in response to the landscapes and landmarks along the Taith Ardudwy pathway in North Wales.

Each piece contains small inclusions of sand collected from Tywyn, Llanaber, Benar, Llandanwg and Harlech beaches. These materials are embedded within the clay body, physically grounding the vessels in the places that informed them.

My new collection is divided into three groups, reflecting the three sections of the route. A larger vessel responds to the standing stones at Bryn Cader Faner in the northern stretch, echoing their scale and presence. A group of three bulbous, narrow-necked forms draws from the central landscape around Pont Ysgethin Bridge, with carved and glazed surfaces that reference long grasses and rolling hills. A final group of three moon jars relates to the southern section at Pont Fadog, inscribed with markings taken from stones found along the path.

Surface and colour are developed through the making process. Coloured slips are applied during handbuilding, alongside my own barium-based matt and crater glazes, coloured with copper oxide, copper carbonate and tin oxide. Recycled copper is also introduced into the glaze, creating subtle variation and movement across each surface.

These vessels sit somewhere between object and record. They hold traces of a specific landscape, while reflecting on impermanence, legacy, and the long history of human presence within North Wales.
